“In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” – Benjamin Franklin

I am pretty sure that if ole Ben was alive today he would add to that quote: “In this world, nothing is certain except death, taxes, and increases to your auto insurance.” This is the frustrating reality with car insurance: it will increase. It is not a matter of when but a matter of how much.

What can we do about this reality? How can we mitigate this issue?

The answer: Customize your auto insurance.

Although insurance is never fully customizable, there are two things you can do to make it more personalized to your situation. This can reduce generalized auto insurance increases that are standard in the industry.

1. Telematics Device

Safewise.com does a great job explaining what a Telematics Device is: “A telematics device is an instrument, usually provided by your insurance company, that you install into your car. It records information about your driving behavior, including how fast you drive, how fast you brake, and the distance you drive.”

Essentially, you install a device in your car that records how you drive. This way your car insurance risk and rate can be assessed based on your driving habits rather than the average driving habits of others like you.

So, if your initial response to your car insurance rate going up is “Why?! I did not get in an accident this year, I did not file a claim, and I am a good driver!” A Telematics device is the ultimate way to prove that fact to an insurance company and better customize your auto insurance.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all insurance companies offer Telematics devices or customizable insurance solutions. This is why the second option on this list is so important…

2. Use an Independent Insurance Agent.

As we have mentioned in our “How Insurance Agents Get Paid” blog there is immense value in an Independent Agent. They work for one company– you! They have relationships with many insurance companies and do a great job finding the best option possible.

This fundamental structure allows them to not only find an insurance company that might have a Telematics option, it allows them to listen to more of your personal insurance needs and find a company that fits your needs best.

Practically speaking, this looks like finding more discounts and having more options to ensure you pay for what you need rather than paying for something generalized.
