What is an insurance agent?
According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, an agent is “one who is authorized to act for or in the place of another.” Actors have agents who represent them and find them roles. Writers have agents who represent them and find them publishers.
An insurance agent is supposed to be someone who represents you and finds you the right insurance policy. Your agent is your representative to the insurance companies. Like I’ve said before, the insurance company simply can’t care about you – it has too many people to worry about. Your agent is the one who cares about you and who can be your voice.
Insurance Abandonment:
With a captive agency, an insurance agent represents the insurance company. The agent is there to sell you a policy on behalf of his or her company. Once the policy is sold, you won’t hear from the agent again. Year after year, the agent will collect your check when your policy renews, and that’s it. Customers are abandoned by the person who is supposed to be on their side.
This is insurance abandonment. And it’s completely backwards! Agents aren’t supposed to be retail outlets for the insurance companies. They’re supposed to be there on your behalf!
That’s the reason I became an independent agent – one who has agreements with several different insurance carriers – so I could represent my customers instead of an insurance company.
Do you know what I most like about my job? Relationships with people. Getting to know people. Keeping in touch. Looking on facebook and seeing what’s going on with everyone’s life. Checking up regularly to make sure they’re getting the best deal.
Being an “absentee agent” instead would take all the fun out of my job!
